Microneedling with PRP in West Palm Beach, FL

Micro-needling Skin Care Treatment

Micro-needling is a treatment which utilizes a device that delivers tiny needle pricks to stimulate the skin’s natural healing processes. The treatment minimizes wrinkles and improves the appearance of scars in all skin types and with minimal recovery.

Treatments take from 30-45 minutes and topical anesthetic can be applied prior to the micro-needling. The skin can appear sunburned after treatment and redness and inflammation can last up to 24 hours but it will improve over a period of a few days to weeks. The treatment is typically recommended in a series depending on patients needs and areas treated.

The Science Behind Microneedling

Once bleeding has ceased, neutrophils enter the injury site and begin phagocytosis to remove foreign material, bacteria, and damaged tissue. Macrophages also enter the injury site and continue phagocytosis and release more PDGF and TGF beta.

Here is a brief summary of the history of microneedling:

1950s –
Dr. Michel Pistor came up with the concept that pricking skin would promote collagen formation (though he did not invent the method itself).

1995 –
Subcision, a new method of subcuticular undermining for the treatment of depressed cutaneous scars and wrinkles is introduced. The mechanism of action is two-fold:

  1. Releasing action of the procedure
  2. New connective tissue via the wound healing response

1997 –
Needle dermabrasion using a “tattoo pistol” to treat scars is introduced. This was intended to remove the tension and tightness in the skin caused by scarring. Patients receiving skin-colored tattoos over facial scars saw evidence of pigmentation after one to two years, even though the tattoo pigment was long gone. Scars were immensely improved in texture, appearance, and color.

1998 –
Dr. Des Fernandes of South Africa presented his findings on needling at the conference in San Francisco. He introduced a needling device — a small needle stamp — to induce collagen and used as a regular treatment in his surgical practice.

2000 –
Horst Liebl, inventor of the original German Dermaroller, designed the very first microneedling medical device. This consisted of many fine needles on a drum-shaped roller device, with the ability to treat larger areas of the skin easily and quickly.

2004 –
Clinical Resolution Laboratory, a California company, redesigned the device, called MTS roller.
