Otoplasty is a procedure that benefits patients who desire less protruding ears in Jupiter, West Palm Beach, and Palm Beach County, Florida. It is performed by Dr. Vartan Mardirossian at the Mardirossian Facial Aesthetics fully licensed surgical suite in Jupiter, FL.
What is Otoplasty?
For many patients who suffer from unbalanced or protruding ears, otoplasty has helped attain the picture of beauty that they desire. This procedure is popular among men and women and re-contours the ear into a more aesthetically pleasing form.
Am I a Candidate for Otoplasty?
You might consider otoplasty if:
- Your ears stick out too far from your head
- Your ears are too large in proportion to your head
- You’re dissatisfied with a previous ear surgery
Otoplasty is typically done on both ears to optimize symmetry. Otoplasty can be done at any age after the ears have reached their full size — usually after age 5. Otoplasty won’t change the location of your ears or alter your ability to hear.
How is Otoplasty Performed?
The otoplasty procedure can be performed in the doctor’s office under local anesthesia or IV sedation. A tiny incision is made in one of the creases behind the ear. The cartilage in the ear structure is repositioned and sutured to produce the desired shape or a position closer to the head. The incision is then sealed with hidden sutures, leaving a virtually invisible scar. The sutures that reposition the ear cartilage are permanent, while the skin sutures will be removed generally seven days after the procedure.
What is Recovery Like After an Otoplasty Procedure?
Following an otoplasty procedure, the patient should wear a surgical dressing, which provides protection and compression for one to two days. There may be some mild discomfort, but the risks for this procedure are otherwise minimal. Wearing a sports band around the clock is recommended during the first week followed by wearing it only at nighttime for two more weeks. To further reduce the possibility of infection, an antibiotic ointment should be applied to the incision area during the recovery period.
