Caitlyn Jenner’s Surgeons Discuss the 10 Hour Procedure

Caitlyn Jenner has put the spotlight on the transgender community. She recently underwent a 10-hour facial feminization surgery (FFS) that gave her the appearance of her true self. Her surgery has shed light on FFS, and how it can be used to benefit transgender peoples. In addition, her surgeons have recently opened up and discussed the specifics of her surgery.

Here’re a few of the things they talked about:

The Importance of Caitlyn’s Brow Lift

Dr. Harrison Lee (Caitlyn’s chief surgeon) made note that, “Men tend to have a prominent brow bone, so you do a little bit of a brow lift, just to soften the image.”

A brow lift is one of the most popular—and important—procedures associated with FFS. It gives transgender patients a youthful, refreshed, and feminine look. The eyes are enlightened—which makes them look less worn, tired, and masculine.

The procedure is done by simply lifting the skin of the forehead to help the eyebrows rise naturally.

The Importance of Caitlyn’s Jaw Contouring

Dr. Lee also partially explained Caitlyn’s jaw contouring by saying,” We went inside her mouth and actually took off the outer portion of her jaw bone and softened it.”

Caitlyn’s jaw contouring was extremely important in helping her appear as her true self. One of the most masculine features of the face is the jawline. Men have square, masculine lower jaws that are unattractive on women.

A jaw contouring procedure—as Dr. Lee noted—helps soften the jawline, making it more feminine.

Caitlyn’s Post Surgical Experience and Fantastic Results

Caitlyn’s surgeons did state that she had some anxiety issues—which were treated with medication—following surgery. The reason for the anxiety issues is a bit surprising.

Dr. Atler—who was another one of Caitlyn’s surgeons—said,” “It’s difficult to suddenly get the realization that you’re getting the fulfillment of what you’ve always wanted to have done.” He also said the anxiety Caitlyn experienced is common, and can happen to anyone that undergoes a major change in their appearance.

After the initial anxiety went away, Caitlyn could enjoy her results.

Dr. Lee mentioned , ” She healed remarkably fast. Maybe because she’s an Olympic athlete… I mean, at 65, she is in remarkable health.”

In addition, he stated,” “I don’t want to show off, but I think she’s ecstatic with the results.”

Conclusion—What’s This Mean for You (and Other Potential FFS Patients)

Caitlyn’s procedure and results aren’t limited to the rich and famous. Facial feminization surgery is readily available and more affordable than ever. It’s a great way to achieve the look of your true self……the look you were supposed to be born with. Brow lift and jaw contouring aren’t the only two procedures that can benefit you. At the time when Caitlyn Jenner’s new look appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, it made the general public aware of an up-and-coming field of cosmetic surgery. Jenner’s new look consisted of a softer brow line, a reshaped nose and chin and gorgeous cheekbones, all of which fall under the category of facial feminization surgery (FFS).

Not Just for the Transgender Community

Although FFS was pioneered in the early 2000s to aid the gender transition process, it isn’t only the transgender community that is taking note of Jenner’s new look. Dr. Vartan Mardirossian, a Palm Beach plastic surgeon who specializes in this field noted, “Women saw that there were things that could be done that they didn’t know before. Take someone with a forehead that they consider too high or too prominent, for example. They don’t know there’s a surgical solution to it. Everything they know about facial plastic surgery is doing injectables or face lifts.”

Dr. Mardirossian performs anywhere between 40 and 60 facial feminization surgeries each year, with many patients coming from out of state – or even from other countries. Approximately one-third of the patients are women who were born female.

Celebrities are a Major Influence

A survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery revealed that more than 80% of plastic surgeons said that celebrities were a major influence on patients’ decisions to have various forms of plastic surgery performed. Academy president Edwin Williams III said in this regard in a press release, “Due to the improving economy and increased consumer awareness, coupled with a growing comfort level with the safety and predictability of cosmetic treatments, we expect the demand for facial cosmetic procedures to continue to expand.”

Another aspect that has resulted in heightened levels of interest in FFS is advances that have been made in procedures like jaw and brow contouring, which involves surgeons re-shaping the facial bones completely. Dr. Mardirossian said, “Facial contouring is among the new frontiers of facial plastic surgery.”

Helping Patients Look More Attractive

Robert Sigal, a Northern Virginia plastic surgeon, says that as applied to women, facial feminization surgery is merely another name for something that cosmetic surgeons have always been doing – namely, helping patients look more attractive. He also mentioned that competition from dermatologists and family practice doctors administering filler injections like Restylane and Juvederm have encouraged plastic surgeons to push the boundaries of what they have done previously. His practice has also seen the biggest increase in using facial fat grafting to enhance feminine facial features over the past five years.

Although the initial preparation to become a plastic surgeon involves six years of training and residency in addition to medical school, the financial end results are highly rewarding. According to, The annual median salary for plastic surgeons tops the $350,000 mark.

The best reward for Dr. Mardirossian and other surgeons is improving their patients’ lives, especially when performing procedures like FFS. “It increases confidence and may even save lives,” he said, referring to the high suicide rate among transgender individuals. “It’s really surgery for the soul.”

“I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.” This was tweeted by Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) on June 1, after she was ready to let the world know she really was by revealing her true identity – the news first appeared on the front cover of the Vanity Fair magazine with a headline entitled, “Call me Caitlyn.”

Before making her announcement to the world, Jenner underwent a 10 hour facial feminization operation as well as a breast augmentation procedure to help her through the transformation process. A reliable family source gave the following statement regarding Caitlyn’s transformation process, “Caitlyn had the gender reassignment surgery after the Vanity Fair project was completed. Caitlyn didn’t want the focus of the story to be focused on the surgery, but instead on the journey of becoming a woman. Caitlyn also had some minor tweaks done cosmetically as well as around the chin and jaw line and has been recovering at her Malibu mansion.”

Overwhelming Support Received

After revealing herself to the world on June 1, Caitlyn received an overwhelming amount of support from across the globe. She has even been nominated to receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYs – this ceremony will be her first public appearance as Caitlyn. She stated the following in an interview with in this regard, “In the past few months, the overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world for my journey has been incredible.
