What is the Problem?
It is fairly common for patients who wear earrings during sleep or heavy earrings to develop enlarged or torn earlobes. This can distort the earlobe and make it difficult or impossible to wear certain pieces of jewelry. However, this can be easily rectified with a minimally invasive procedure at Mardirossian Facial Aesthetics.
How is a Torn Earlobe Repair Performed?
This cosmetic procedure can be completed in our office while the patient is under local anesthesia. Dr. Mardirossian will delicately remove any scarred or damaged tissue from the torn earlobe and then suture the hole in the earlobe. Within a week the small sutures are removed, allowing the ear to return to its natural state. In a month’s time, the patient can return to the doctor’s office to re-pierce their ear. This is a low-risk procedure with a very low probability of bleeding or bruising. A topical antibiotic ointment should be applied to the earlobes to minimize the risk of infection.
Can the Earlobes be Rejuvenated?
During the procedure, the shape of the earlobe can be improved, and the shape can be changed to a rounder and a younger-looking earlobe. Dr. Mardirossian has developed a technique to perform this in the setting of a torn earlobe repair and a standalone procedure. Another ear reconstruction procedure we frequently perform is the repair of “pixie ears” resulting from facelift and neck lift procedures performed elsewhere. The earlobe in those cases is attached to the cheek skin with a complete or partial loss of its definition. In all of these cases, self-absorbing and non-absorbing sutures are used under local anesthesia. Sutures are removed seven days postoperative.
