Rhinoplasty Surgery Overview

Rhinoplasty is plastic surgery done to reshape or repair the nose, often called a nose job. Rhinoplasty can make a nose smaller; remove a “bump” or curve in the nose; change the tip or angle of the nose and correct indentation or other defects in the nose.

Rhinoplasty is done under general anesthesia and is commonly an outpatient procedure. The surgery can be done in a hospital but most of the time is performed in a plastic surgery center. Surgeons who preform rhinoplasties will be plastic surgeons or otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat doctors) but finding a plastic surgeon with a specialty in facial plastic surgery is recommended.

During rhinoplasty surgery, the facial plastic surgeon makes incisions to access the cartilage and bonesthat support the nose. What is done during the surgery will depend on the desired result. Some bone or cartilage may be removed or tissue or synthetic filler added to complete the surgery. The facial plastic surgeon will rearrange and reshape the bone and cartilage in the nose then the incision will be closed.
