Different Types of Wrinkles & How to Fix Them

Facial Wrinkles

Not all wrinkles are the same, and this means that not all wrinkle treatments are the same. Here, you can learn more about each of the five types of wrinkles, how they form, and the best ways to reduce their appearances through lifestyle changes and cosmetic treatments.

Elastic Wrinkles

Elastic wrinkles are those that form due to spending too much time in the sun or in a tanning bed. They look like creases, and they’re more common on your neck, lips, and cheeks. If you want to avoid them, cover up before going in the sun and make sure you’re using plenty of sunscreen. Although tanning beds can help you achieve a gorgeous golden color, they’ll also cause wrinkles. Swap your tanning sessions for high-quality spray tans instead. If you already have elastic wrinkles, certain types of chemical peels and laser treatments can reduce their appearance.

Gravitation Wrinkles

Gravitation wrinkles appear anywhere on your face, and they are caused by the loss of elastin and collagen in your skin. This may occur naturally with the aging process, or it may occur due to skin damage. They look like saggy skin accompanied by wrinkles, and it can range from mild to severe. Keeping your skin moisturized can help prevent them, as can following good skincare guidelines. While the best treatment is a facelift, there are other options available. For example, a browlift can help reduce the appearance of gravitation wrinkles around the eyes.

Atrophic Wrinkles

Atrophic wrinkles are the deep lines on your forehead between your eyes, and they’re sometimes called “worry lines” since they tend to occur when you furrow your brows. Fat loss in the skin, as well as the aging process, can cause these wrinkles to form and worsen over time. There’s little to do to prevent them other than keeping your skin moisturized, but regular Botox treatments can keep them at bay. For deeper atrophic wrinkles, fillers can help restore volume and reduce their appearance.

Compression Wrinkles

If you’ve ever woken up with wrinkles set in your skin after a good night’s sleep – such as those that tend to form between your breasts or on your neck – then you’ve experienced compression wrinkles. These often fade within a few hours, but over time, they can stick around. Try sleeping on your back or using quality pillows to prevent them, but if you’re already dealing with them, the best treatment is a good filler.

Expression Wrinkles

Frown and laugh lines are the two most common types of expression wrinkles. They occur around your mouth, between your eyebrows, and on the corners of your eyes (crow’s feet). They’re caused by making the same expressions throughout a lifetime, and it isn’t realistic to never smile again. However, expression wrinkles caused by smoking can be prevented by ditching the cigarettes. Botox and other fillers are available for correcting these wrinkles.

Wrinkles come in many different shapes, sizes, and styles. While it’s possible to prevent some of them by making a few simple lifestyle changes, others are just a part of life. Fortunately, it’s possible to utilize fillers, Botox, and even facial plastic surgery to improve the appearance of all of these wrinkle types.
