How to Naturally Debloat Your Face

Facial Debloat

Facial bloating (also referred to as “moon face”) is a common complaint, and it affects men and women alike. Bloating in the facial area is often accompanied by redness, tightness, and an overall “tired” appearance. Here, you’ll learn several methods that you can use to debloat your face naturally, without the need for surgery.

What Causes Facial Bloating?

Before you can truly understand why the methods listed below will work to debloat your face, it’s important to first understand the things that cause facial bloating in the first place. The most common causes include:

  • Certain medications, both OTC and prescription. Some medicines will cause your body to retain water. The worst of these is a type of medicine called corticosteroids, which includes prednisone among others.
  • Too much sodium in your diet. Sodium exacerbates water retention, so if you’re prone to facial bloating, keep your sodium consumption in check. Processed foods, fast foods, and even restaurant foods contain more salt than you may realize.
  • Pregnancy. Women who are pregnant are also prone to water retention thanks to hormone fluctuations.
  • Menopause. Menopausal and post-menopausal women often experience hormone fluctuations, which can also cause facial bloating.
  • Medical conditions. Some medical conditions may lead to facial swelling, as well. These include kidney, liver, and heart conditions, as well as others.

#1 – A Gentle Diuretic

Most of the time, a simple, gentle diuretic can help the body rid itself of extra fluid that leads to bloating. There are plenty of diuretics available over the counter, and you can find herbal diuretics in most drug and department stores, as well. Some options include dandelion, hawthorn, juniper, black or green tea, parsley, and even small amounts of caffeine. If you have any underlying medical conditions, or if you are currently taking any prescription medications, be sure you talk to your doctor before using any of these products.

#2 – Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage is a technique in which the lymph nodes are manually drained, which helps relieve fluid accumulation throughout the body. Though it was first developed as a form of treatment for patients who had their lymph nodes removed during a surgical procedure, it’s since then become a popular method to relieve water retention throughout the body, but primarily in the face and the extremities. You can perform lymphatic massage on yourself, or you can go to a professional who specializes in this sort of massage.

#3 – Cold Water & Witch Hazel

Splashing cold water on your face is a great way to spark your energy for the day, and it is common practice for many people. However, there’s also evidence to suggest that dunking your face in cold water can help to debloat your face naturally, especially when you add some witch hazel to the mix. Cold causes the tissues in your face to constrict, which then forces the moisture outward where it can be absorbed by the body and eventually flushed out. Witch hazel is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help extend the effects of the cold water. Just fill a large bowl with water, toss in about 15 ice cubes, add a third of a cup of alcohol-free witch hazel, and dunk your face into the mix 10 times. You’ll notice an immediate difference.

As you can see, there are a few different ways you can debloat your face naturally – and safely. Lymphatic massage and the cold water bath will work for anyone, but you should check with your doctor before you use any diuretic if you have any medical conditions or are taking prescription medication. They’ll help quickly, and with regular use, they’ll help keep future water retention at bay.
