What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty Info

The decision to go ahead with rhinoplasty surgery is an important one that should only be made after proper consultation and education. It’s important to get to know your surgeon and understand the specifics of the surgery. It’s also equally important to know what to expect after surgery. We often see patients get wrapped up in the anticipation and excitement associated with the idea of a new look and neglect education in regards to post operative experiences. Should you be near your surgical date, it’s important that you know what to expect from the time you wake up to the time you fully recovery.

Post Operative

There can be some minor side effects immediately after you wake up from surgery. They’ll usually go away after a couple hours; however, we’ve seen them linger a bit longer in some patients. It’s not something to be worried or scared about, but you should make proper arrangements. We recommend having an adult stay with you for the first day after your operation.

There will be a small splint and bandage on your nose when you wake up. There might be some pain and swelling. If there is, you shouldn’t worry. It’s normal. Your surgeon and nursing staff will know what to do to control your pain. There also might be some nasal blockage. Again, nothing to be overly concerned about. Let your surgeon or nurse know and they will be able to alleviate the unpleasant symptom.

Cold compresses, head elevation, and pain medication can be used to help minimize side effects once you go home. Make note that the prevalence and severity of them always varies. You may even experience little to none. If this is the case (as it often is), it means your body is responding well to the surgery and healing properly.

What to Expect after the Surgery

There will be a certain amount of pain and discomfort associated with certain movements involving your face muscles but most of the time it is short term. This is seen soon after surgery and can last for just a couple of weeks. Eating, drinking, and speaking can sometimes be a bit difficult but this will go away. It’s recommended that you make arrangements and buy soft foods in advance. Additionally, you should make sure that someone is always around should you need help with something.

Gradual Results

In a perfect world, you would wake up from surgery and immediately see full results. In reality, your results will only be seen gradually and are dictated by your body’s healing processes. There are certain things that you can do pre-surgery to stimulate post surgery recovery. Asking your physician for recommendations is always best.
