Give Up These 5 Things to Look Younger

Looking Young

You’ve probably heard a lot about the products out there that can make you look younger, but did you know that there are several things you might be doing each day that are cause you to age? The following five things have a tremendous impact on the way you look, so if you want to look younger, you should consider giving them up.

#1 – Cigarettes

A surprising study that focused on two 57-year-old twins – one who smoked and one who did not – proved that smoking cigarettes makes you look older. The twin smoker had more sagging of the upper eyelids, baggier lower lids, bags under her eyes, more facial wrinkles, a sagging chin, wrinkling along the upper and lower lips, and lines between the nose and mouth. The repetitive motion of drawing on a cigarette causes lines and wrinkles, and because a smoker does not have as much oxygen in the capillaries just under the skin, it tends to look dull, as well.

#2 – Tanning

Although many people really enjoy the glow they achieve after going to the tanning bed or spending an afternoon basking in the sun, the truth is that those UVA and UVB rays are actually aging your skin much faster than normal. Over time, the damage these rays do to your skin cause it to thicken and lose elasticity. As such, tanning enthusiasts often have leathery skin that appears to pull away from the muscles in the face and other parts of the body.

#3 – Heavy Foundation

While people everywhere have long relied on foundation to cover imperfections on their faces, the truth is that heavy foundation can actually settle into rough patches and wrinkles, making them appear deeper and rougher than they actually are. To combat this, throw out that heavy cake foundation and instead invest in a water-based foundation that gives light to medium coverage. What’s more, consider a primer before applying foundation since it fills in lines and pores.

#4 – Refined Sugar

Although a little bit of refined sugar is fine in moderation, regularly consuming beverages and foods filled with white sugar and high fructose corn syrup wreaks havoc on your body’s tissues. They cause the “glycation” of tissue, which essentially means it makes them more brittle. When delicate skin on your face and other parts of your body contains sugar-soaked vessels, tissues in and just beneath your skin degenerate and cause you to age much more rapidly.

#5 – Alcohol

Alcohol in moderation is fine, but consuming more than one glass of wine regularly or consuming it excessively dehydrates your body. When you are dehydrated, the natural fibers and collagen in your skin become damaged and altered, which can lead to wrinkles and drooping. If you enjoy a night out on the town now and then, be sure to follow up with plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Although there are plenty of products out there that are designed to help you look younger, keep in mind that it is up to you to prevent aging in the first place. The five things listed above can expedite the aging process and make you look much older than you really are.
