A Growing Plastic Surgery Demographic – Millennial Men

July 17th, 2017 by

Millennial Men Plastic Surgery

Per a survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 31% of men said they would consider surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Of those men, 58% were age 25 to 34, and another 35% were age 18 to 24. This indicates that most men interested in cosmetic procedures are younger millennial men. This may seem unexpected, but the reasons are simple.

Why Do Men Want to Look Younger?

When most people think of cosmetic procedures, they think of middle-aged women. However, this trend is starting to shift as men are pursuing procedures more than ever. Those surveyed cited several reasons why they wanted these procedures to look younger.

  • A self-esteem boost was the number one reason why younger men wanted to undergo any procedure, including surgical options. They felt that having such a procedure would make them feel better about their appearances.
  • Reducing the appearance of fatigue and stress was another common factor; many of these men claimed long work hours and a busy lifestyle left them looking older than they truly were.
  • Pleasing their partners was the least common reason provided by millennial men for having cosmetic procedures, though men ages 25 to 34 often claimed they wanted such procedures to improve their odds of meeting mates.
  • Remaining competitive in the workforce was the top reason provided by men ages 25 to 34; they felt that looking younger would give their employers the sense that they maintained fresh perspectives and were good prospects for new jobs, promotions, etc.
  • Different reasons not listed in the survey were given by almost 25% of men ages 18 to 24; less than 5% of men ages 25 to 34% had a reason for seeking procedures other than those above. The “other” category was not specified in the survey. However, surgeons speculate that these men are influenced by social media, and they likely want to resemble their peers.

What Are the Most Common Procedures?

Men request many of the same cosmetic procedures as their female counterparts, as well. In fact, the top surgeries are the same for both sexes.

  • Rhinoplasty was the number one requested surgery among millennial men, which is in line with the number of nose jobs performed on women each year.
  • Breast augmentation isn’t just for women; treatment for gynecomastia grew in popularity among millennial men who were either overweight or who had testosterone disorders.
  • Otoplasty, or a surgery which involves pinning back the ears to make them appear less pronounced, is far more common among men than women.

Changing Attitudes and Social Acceptance

Perhaps the biggest influence driving millennial men to their local plastic surgeons’ offices is the changing overall attitude toward such procedures. While plastic surgery (and even nonsurgical treatments like Botox) were once considered taboo, these days, they’re part of everyday lives. Celebrities openly admit to having such treatments, and because they’re in the public eye, they’re less stigmatized than they were even a decade ago. This is driving men who want to feel better about themselves, remain competitive in the workforce, or even find (or keep) a mate to consider cosmetic procedures they would not have considered only a few short years ago.

With millennial men between the ages of 20 and 30 seeking more cosmetic procedures now than ever, it’s expected that this trend will continue. Surgeons across the country offer surprisingly low prices for the most popular procedures, and this makes them attainable on just about any budget.

5 Ways to Get Ready for Beach Season

Getting Ready for Beach Season

Beach season is right around the corner. Are you ready? If not, don’t fret – most people would tell you they aren’t prepared for beach season either. The good news is it’s never too late to get ready. Just use these five great ways to get ready now.

Botox Facial Injections

You can make sure your skin is looking it’s very best by getting Botox facial injections. These injections will make your face appear smoother, fuller, and more youthful. Be sure to schedule your injections for a time when you don’t plan to be outside directly after. Although most people can go about their normal day, some people do feel tenderness or experience bruising directly following the procedure. To be on the safe side, give your skin a minimum of three days to heal before you hit the beach.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are all the rage in skincare. You can diminish the appearance of imperfections, get a deep down clean, and make skin smoother by shedding the top layers of skin. The results are breath-taking. You won’t be able to stop touching your skin after feeling how smooth it is!

Scar Revision

Scars are often unavoidable, but they can drastically effect your confidence in rocking your bikini. Scars can be left over from cesareans, accidents, sports injuries, illnesses, and a whole host of other things. Scar revision can help to greatly diminish the appearance of scars, making them appear more faded and less noticeable.  If you have scars holding  you back, this is an absolute must-do to get ready for beach season.

Dieting

Dieting isn’t about eating less, or starving yourself. Dieting is about making healthy choices, practicing appropriate portion control, and indulging a little less often. A few minor changes can make a dramatic difference in a short amount of time, and those small changes are easier to upkeep. For example, cutting out just one soda and one snack cake every day (a Twinkie, for example) is reducing your diet by 305 calories a day. Substitute a bottle of icy water, and some celery sticks instead. You’ll be giving your body what you need, and by making that one slight change you can lose a pound’s worth of calories every 5 days!

Exercise

Exercise can help tone your muscles, reduce body fat, and make you feel good. Your skin reaps benefits, too, because moderate exercise helps tone your skin right along with those muscles.  Small steps can see big results over the long-term. A 130-pound person walking at a moderate pace will burn approximately 2 pounds every minute. If you do this for just 15 minutes every day, you’re burning an extra 210 calories every week. That means every seven weeks you’ll burn an extra pound with minimal effort, and – more importantly – you’ll keep it off, because you’re making a small, sustainable change.

How Nicotine Can Derail Your Plastic Surgery Efforts

February 9th, 2017 by

No Smoking - Plastic Surgery

If you’ve talked to a surgeon about having plastic surgery, he or she probably told you not to smoke. This is amazing advice for many reasons. Many people may turn to smoking substitutes, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum, or even electronic cigarettes to keep those cravings at bay. However, these can be just as harmful as smoking. Studies have shown that nicotine can impact your body’s ability to heal, and this may derail your efforts.

Plastic Surgery vs. Traditional Surgery

Before you can fully understand how and why nicotine can impact your ability to heal after a plastic surgery, it’s important to look at the differences between plastic and traditional surgery. When you have your gallbladder removed, for example, your surgeon can make a simple incision, remove your gallbladder, and then close that incision with stitches and/or staples (depending on the procedure). These incisions can heal quite simply because there’s minimal damage to the skin other than the incision itself.

When you have plastic surgery, it’s more traumatizing to your skin. Your doctor can’t simply make a small incision; he or she must cut through the top layer of your skin, then move it around, stretch it, pull it, and place it just so. This is quite traumatic, and it requires all your body’s healing capabilities.

It’s All About the Blood Vessels

During a traditional surgery, your doctor can work around blood vessels when necessary. With plastic surgery, there’s no way to avoid severing some of those blood vessels to provide you with the best possible results. Your surgeon works hard to leave some of the blood vessels intact, but he or she cannot preserve all of them. The ones left behind must have adequate blood flow. Otherwise, your skin will not heal properly. Nicotine can affect this by dilating the blood vessels, restricting the flow of blood, and compromising your body’s ability to heal properly.

Some of the Side Effects of Nicotine Use

Restricting the flow of blood inside your blood vessels can have some significant consequences. For example, it can result in:

  • Infections that may become severe, even with treatment;
  • Slow healing of wounds;
  • Potentially fatal blood clots;
  • Hard lumps caused by the death of fat cells;
  • Permanent damage to small blood vessels;
  • Loss of skin flaps following a surgery, including tummy skin, check skin, or even nipples;
  • Larger scars; and
  • Other potentially life-threatening complications such as pneumonia, heart attack, or stroke.

What to Do If You Smoke

If you’re a smoker – or if you use nicotine in any form – it is best to quit at least six weeks prior to your surgery and to stay away for at least six weeks after. This way, you can help your blood vessels remain as open and unrestricted as possible, which facilitates better, faster healing and helps ensure that you’ll get the results you wanted. Stay away from cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, nicotine patches and gum, and even electronic cigarettes.

Nicotine is bad for your body in many ways, and while you might think that you’ll be okay if you don’t use nicotine during the healing process, this is often not the case. Nicotine affects your body for long after you stop using it, and that’s why you should quit weeks before your procedure.

Why a Nightly Skin Regime for your Face is So Important

January 26th, 2017 by

Nightly Skin Regime

Millions of women go to bed each night without removing their makeup or performing any type of cleansing routine. While they may think that this saves them time and effort, the truth is that over time, their skin will suffer significant damage. Noted below are just a few reasons why you need to get into the habit of implementing a nightly sin care regime for your face.

Look Younger for Longer

Ensuring that all makeup and other skincare products are properly washed off your face before going to bed each night will help stimulate the internal processes that fight against aging. During the night, your skin requires an uninterrupted supply of oxygen to repair and rejuvenate itself, and going to bed while wearing makeup will deprive your skin of this essential nutrient. Removing your makeup before bed will also ensure that your skin doesn’t look dull and lifeless the following morning.

Keep your Pores as Small as Possible

When makeup is not removed before going to bed, you are also allowing excess sebum (oil), dirt, dead skin cells and other forms of pollution to remain on your skin longer than is necessary. In addition, makeup has the ability to sink extremely deeply into the skin’s pores and clog them. Using the right cleanser for your skin type will help ensure that your pores are kept clean and will not become enlarged over time. As you age, it becomes more crucial than ever to allow your skin to breathe at night because a lack of oxygen can generate free radicals, causing it to lose elasticity prematurely.

Prevent your Skin from Dehydrating

Your skin’s temperature rises during the night, which results in it losing a significant amount of moisture. This results in the skin feeling itchier during the night. Not washing makeup off of your face before going to bed at night means that you will not be able to apply a night time moisturizing product to help ensure that your facial skin remains hydrated while you are asleep.

Enable Anti-Aging Ingredients to do their Job

Blood flow through the facial skin is higher during night time hours. This results in more harmful ingredients from your makeup and cosmetic products being absorbed into your body when your face is not washed before bed. It also prevents you from being able to use other products to help fight the signs of aging or to treat other skin conditions that you may have.

Failing to wash your face or at least ensure that all traces of makeup are removed before retiring for the night will prevent you from having the smoothest, softest and clearest skin possible. Always ensure that you use the correct types of products for your skin type as well. If you are unsure of what skin type you have, it is recommended that you chat with a dermatologist or skin specialist before purchasing makeup or cleanser to use on your face.

65 Year Olds Getting More Plastic Surgery than Ever Before

You might think that it’s the younger generation accounting for the additional $1.5 billion spent on plastic surgery in 2015 when compared to the year before, but the truth is that it’s the older generation who is responsible for the vast increase in spending. More people age 65 years and older are getting plastic surgery than any other time in history. Why is this, and will the trend continue?

Is It the Demographics?

The Baby Boomer generation is in its 60s and 70s, and they represent a large portion of the population. That’s one of the reasons why surgeries are becoming more prevalent in this age group; there are simply more people of that age. However, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery claims that the rate of eyelid surgeries in that group has gone up by 62%, and people age 65 and older are getting twice the number of facelifts. This seems to point away from demographics completely.

The Acceptance of Plastic Surgery

Many experts feel that one of the reasons why so many people are seeking plastic surgery now has to do with the slow decline of the social stigma that surrounds cosmetic surgery. Television and social media has made it more acceptable than ever before. People are also more accepting of it because it is less expensive than it once was, and many of the procedures that were once invasive are now only minimally so. Thanks to peer acceptance, lower cost, and less discomfort and recovery time, people tend to look more closely at their options and inevitably go through with the procedures.

Why This Age Group?

If it isn’t demographics, what is driving people aged 65 and older to seek so much more plastic surgery than before? There are many reasons.

  • They want to feel visible. Often, older individuals feel as if they’re looked over when it comes to dating and social activities. They obtain cosmetic procedures to feel validated.
  • They want to look the age they feel. There’s no denying that 65 is the new 55, and people just don’t feel their ages. Thanks to advances in medicine and technology, many people who are 65 or older continue to live active everyday lives. They date, they go to work, and they enjoy going out to social gatherings. Cosmetic surgery allows them to look the same way they feel – young.
  • They want equal opportunity. There are more people age 65 and older in the workforce now than there has been in decades, and many of these people feel as if they’re being discriminated against due to age. If they can look younger, they’ll have a shot at that promotion that everyone is competing for.

As you can see, the older generation has many reasons to pursue plastic surgery, and the numbers don’t lie – they are. Procedures like eyelid augmentation and facelifts have more than doubled among this age group in the last few years, and the trend shows no sign of slowing down.

5 Things you Could be Doing Everyday to Tighten up the Skin on your Face

October 20th, 2015 by

Skin Tightening

You don’t always need Botox injections and other skin tightening procedures to look your very best. By maintaining a simple routine that incorporates a few beauty essentials into your day, you can eliminate wrinkles by yourself. Here are five skin tightening techniques that you should try.

1: Egg Whites and Yogurt

Egg whites are a natural astringent, and plain yogurt has proteins and nutrients in it that can help tighten up skin and eliminate wrinkles. These are good foods to include as part of your diet, but you can also apply them topically. Simply mix one tablespoon of plain yogurt with one to two egg whites, whisk them together, and apply the mixture to your skin. Leave it on your skin for a period of 20 to 30 minutes and enjoy the results.

2: Citrus Fruit

Lemons, limes, oranges, and other citrus fruits have natural skin tightening and wrinkle reducing properties. You can reap the benefits of citrus fruit in one of two ways. First, you can use the juice from these fruits as part of a facial rinse. Just make sure not to get it in your eyes. Second, you can take the peels, dry them out, and use them as part of a facial scrub. Oranges are most popular in this regard, since most people enjoy the smell as well as the texture.

3: Aloe Vera

Most skin treatments have aloe vera in them because this plant has natural healing properties. It can reduce age spots and help repair damage caused by exposure to UV radiation, such as sun burns. While using a skin cream with aloe vera is definitely an option you should consider, it is also possible to grow an aloe vera plant in your own home. You can then use the plant’s leaves as part of a facial rub.

4: Eat More Strawberries

Strawberries are high in vitamin C, which is a very necessary nutrient if you want to see you skin get tighter very quickly. It also has a high level of antioxidants and hydroxyl acids, both of which have skin tightening and wrinkle removing properties. You can add two to three servings or strawberries into your diet, be it as a dessert, as a topping for cereal and yogurt, or even as part of a jam. Doing so will help your skin immensely.

5: Cinnamon and Olive Oil

Cinnamon is an anti-inflammatory and one of the healthiest spices out there. Olive oil has all the skin benefits of fruits like oranges and other citrus. By combining the two, you can create a very effective paste that, when applied to your skin once or twice a week, can eliminate wrinkles and age spots. When you aren’t using that mixture as a topical solution, try adding a bit more cinnamon into your diet to enjoy its many benefits.
These are just a few skin tightening techniques that can help you look and feel younger. They are simple to do and can become part of your daily routine, so make sure to give these methods a try.

Anti-Aging Best Practices We Can All Start Now

September 2nd, 2015 by

Anti Aging

Many people purchase products every single day designed to remove wrinkles, whiten teeth, fade age spots, and turn back the hands of time. The sad truth is that there is no fountain of youth. The best way to enjoy a younger, healthier appearance is to get involved in anti-aging practices early and prevent the wrinkles before they begin. Here are five anti-aging tips we can all start right now.

#1 – Stop Smoking

If you smoke, you are prone to wrinkles around your mouth and between your eyebrows since these facial muscles must contract in order to draw on the cigarette. Not only will quitting smoking how help you protect your lungs, your heart, and your body in general, but it will also prevent wrinkles, reduce the number of contaminants in your blood that eventually reach your skin, and help you enjoy a more youthful, glowing look over time.

#2 – Use SPF Religiously

In today’s day and age, most of us have a tube of sunblock in a cabinet somewhere, and we can remember to slather it on before we go to the zoo, park, or beach. Unfortunately, it only takes a few minutes of harmful UV exposure per day to cause wrinkles and even skin cancer. Sunblock is one of the best anti-aging treatments in the world. It prevents UV rays from penetrating your skin, releasing free radicals, and destroying the tissues beneath. Remember to put on your sunblock each morning before you leave the house, and consider investing in high SPF makeup if you want simplicity.

#3 – Drink More Water

Numerous studies show how the effects of dehydration make people appear much older than they really are. It is important to consume at least 64 ounces of water per day – or eight 8-ounce glasses – in order to make sure that enough of the water you consume reaches your skin and provides your skin cells with the fuel they need. Dehydrated skin is flaky, dry, and brittle, and because it is not as resilient, it wrinkles easier, too. Water is the best (and oldest) anti-aging treatment in the world, so make sure you get enough each day.

#4 – Get More Sleep

In today’s busy world, very few adults actually get enough sleep. While most of us can function on five or six hours if we depend on caffeine and sugar, this opens a Pandora’s box of trouble. Coffee stains your teeth, making you look older, and sugars cause inflammation throughout the body that stiffens the soft collagen in your skin. Rather than gearing up with sugar- or caffeine-laden beverages in the morning, try getting seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Your body and your appearance will thank you.

#5 – Exercise a Little Every Day

We all know that exercise is good for our bodies. It helps keep our weight in check, and it wards off a number of health conditions including diabetes and heart problems. However, exercise is also important for a youthful appearance, and most people could benefit from this anti-aging treatment. Cardiovascular and aerobic activities, especially, improve the function of our hearts and lungs. When this happens, more oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood makes it to our skin, and our skin can replenish collagen and moisture with ease.

People all over the world want an anti-aging cure that allows them to reverse the effects of time. The best anti-aging practices are those that take care of your whole body. Exercising, sleeping right, and staying hydrated are often just as effective as expensive creams.
