Per a survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 31% of men said they would consider surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Of those men, 58% were age 25 to 34, and another 35% were age 18 to 24. This indicates that most men interested in cosmetic procedures are younger millennial men. This may seem unexpected, but the reasons are simple.
Why Do Men Want to Look Younger?
When most people think of cosmetic procedures, they think of middle-aged women. However, this trend is starting to shift as men are pursuing procedures more than ever. Those surveyed cited several reasons why they wanted these procedures to look younger.
A self-esteem boost was the number one reason why younger men wanted to undergo any procedure, including surgical options. They felt that having such a procedure would make them feel better about their appearances.
Reducing the appearance of fatigue and stress was another common factor; many of these men claimed long work hours and a busy lifestyle left them looking older than they truly were.
Pleasing their partners was the least common reason provided by millennial men for having cosmetic procedures, though men ages 25 to 34 often claimed they wanted such procedures to improve their odds of meeting mates.
Remaining competitive in the workforce was the top reason provided by men ages 25 to 34; they felt that looking younger would give their employers the sense that they maintained fresh perspectives and were good prospects for new jobs, promotions, etc.
Different reasons not listed in the survey were given by almost 25% of men ages 18 to 24; less than 5% of men ages 25 to 34% had a reason for seeking procedures other than those above. The “other” category was not specified in the survey. However, surgeons speculate that these men are influenced by social media, and they likely want to resemble their peers.
What Are the Most Common Procedures?
Men request many of the same cosmetic procedures as their female counterparts, as well. In fact, the top surgeries are the same for both sexes.
Rhinoplasty was the number one requested surgery among millennial men, which is in line with the number of nose jobs performed on women each year.
Breast augmentation isn’t just for women; treatment for gynecomastia grew in popularity among millennial men who were either overweight or who had testosterone disorders.
Otoplasty, or a surgery which involves pinning back the ears to make them appear less pronounced, is far more common among men than women.
Changing Attitudes and Social Acceptance
Perhaps the biggest influence driving millennial men to their local plastic surgeons’ offices is the changing overall attitude toward such procedures. While plastic surgery (and even nonsurgical treatments like Botox) were once considered taboo, these days, they’re part of everyday lives. Celebrities openly admit to having such treatments, and because they’re in the public eye, they’re less stigmatized than they were even a decade ago. This is driving men who want to feel better about themselves, remain competitive in the workforce, or even find (or keep) a mate to consider cosmetic procedures they would not have considered only a few short years ago.
